MESSAGE HIGHLIGHTS

An extended biblical teaching reading Scripture as one unified revelation — the New Jerusalem, believers as living stones, the three witnesses on earth, the design of Eden and its four rivers, the table of nations, and Abraham's covenant, held together as connected stages of a single divine story.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  1. 1

Read Scripture as one unified revelation — Scripture interprets Scripture, and the Bible rather than human opinion is the standard.

  2. 2

God is preparing a permanent dwelling whose centre is God Himself and not a building, and believers are the living stones being formed into that house.

  3. 3

The three witnesses on earth — spirit, water and blood — must come into agreement, and genuine faith produces an inward witness others cannot talk you out of.

  4. 4

Eden was designed, not improvised, and its four rivers picture how life, resources, peoples and lineages flow outward from one source.

  5. 5

The genealogies, Babel and Abraham's calling are not random — they are the historical setting for one covenant story that unfolds on God's own timing.

From Eden to the New Jerusalem — Scripture as one unified revelation

5 PARTS · 5 STUDY QUESTIONS

How to read the Bible

  • Read Scripture as one unified revelation. Scripture interprets Scripture, and the Bible rather than human opinion is the standard for understanding spiritual reality.

  • Biblical images carry spiritual meaning. Water, blood, rivers, precious stones, gates, gardens, mountains and covenants are signs pointing to wider realities — so geography in Genesis is more than history.

The New Jerusalem and the living stones

  • God is preparing a permanent dwelling for His people: no more death or pain, jasper, gold and pearls, twelve gates named for the tribes, twelve foundations named for the apostles, no temple and no sun — because God and the Lamb are its temple and its light.

  • The true centre of the city is God Himself, not a building. The precious materials represent the glory, value and permanence of what He is building.

  • Believers are living stones being formed into God's spiritual house — a holy priesthood, chosen generation, royal priesthood, holy nation. The same imagery used for the heavenly city is used for the people of God.

  • Revelation 21
  • 1 Peter 2

The three witnesses, and the inward witness

  • Three bear witness in heaven — the Father, the Word and the Holy Spirit — and three on earth: the spirit, the water and the blood.

  • The three on earth must come into agreement. Spiritual life requires harmony within the whole person; the inner life and the physical life must align with God's Word.

  • Genuine faith produces an inward witness. A believer who can easily be talked out of their faith may not yet have a settled inner conviction.

  • 1 John 5

Eden was designed, not improvised

  • Trees pleasant to the eye, trees good for food, the tree of life, the tree of knowledge, and a river dividing into four. Beauty, provision, geography and resources all belong to God's design.

  • The four rivers. Pishon (Havilah — gold, bdellium, onyx), Gihon (Cush), Hiddekel (east of Assyria) and Euphrates (fruitfulness). They picture how life, resources, peoples and lineages flow outward from a central source.

  • After the expulsion, cherubim guarded the way to the tree of life.

  • Genesis 1-3

The nations, Babel, and the call of Abraham

  • The genealogies are not random. The dispersal of nations after the Flood created the historical setting in which God would call Abraham.

  • Babel was a centralised social, political and cultural system, not merely a shared vocabulary — and God disrupted it.

  • Abraham was called out of the gathering at Chaldea; his family had assembled there rather than originating there. His covenant encounter was an expanded, ecstatic revelation, not an ordinary dream.

  • The covenant. The shield and the exceeding great reward, 400 years of affliction, judgment on the oppressor, the smoking oven and burning torch, and the land from the river of Egypt to the Euphrates.

  • God's promises unfold according to His own timing and judgment — Abraham's descendants would return only when the iniquity of the Amorites reached its appointed limit.

  • Genesis 9-11
  • Genesis 15
  • Hebrews 12
  • Deuteronomy 7

QUESTIONS TO SIT WITH

For personal study, or to take into a group.

  1. 1

Is your inward witness settled enough that no argument could move it? If not, what would settle it?

  2. 2

Spirit, water and blood must agree. Where is your inner life out of agreement with your outward life?

  3. 3

Eden was designed — beauty, provision, geography, resources. What does that say about how God intends you to live?

  4. 4

God waited until the iniquity of the Amorites was full. What are you asking God to hurry that He is timing deliberately?

  5. 5

If you are a living stone in a building, what does that mean for how you relate to the other stones?
