MESSAGE HIGHLIGHTS

A leadership teaching from the opening chapters of Genesis: humanity made in God's image and given dominion, light brought into a dark and unformed environment, and the seed principle. Leadership here is the work of maximising potential until Christ becomes visible in everything a person touches.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  1. 1

People were created to lead — the image and likeness of God carries the mandate to be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth and exercise dominion.

  2. 2

Believers are salt and light, and influence that stays hidden or ineffective fails its purpose.

  3. 3

Leaders create from apparent nothing and establish order, acknowledging God's presence first and using words purposefully.

  4. 4

The seed principle: everything holds a present form and a future potential, and leaders reproduce their own values, culture and character in those they develop.

  5. 5

The aim is God's glory, not personal prominence — the first Adam fell short, Jesus the second Adam fulfils it, and creation waits for that manifestation.

Christian leadership and the creation mandate

5 PARTS · 5 STUDY QUESTIONS

People were created to lead

  • Leadership is part of the human vocation, written into the image and likeness of God and the mandate to exercise dominion — not an optional role for a few.

  • Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, subdue it.

  • Genesis 1

Salt and light

  • Salt. Influence, relevance and preservation.

  • Light. Visibility, truth, righteousness, wisdom and revelation.

  • Influence that is hidden or ineffective fails its purpose. Become so relevant through character and works that the impact cannot be ignored.

  • Light is shown through good works and order, not only knowledge. God brought light into a dark, unformed environment: light made distinctions visible and set the conditions for everything that followed.

  • Matthew 5:13-16

What leaders actually do

  • Create from apparent nothing. Leaders are not defined by what is missing — they identify possibilities and build where there is little structure.

  • Establish order. Bring clarity, priorities, systems and discipline to chaotic situations.

  • Acknowledge God's presence first. The Spirit moved over the chaotic waters before the word brought visible change. Spiritual leadership begins with dependence on God.

  • Use words purposefully. Align speech with faith, truth, vision and God's purposes rather than speaking carelessly. Adam's naming of the animals shows that leaders must perceive reality accurately and call things by their proper names.

  • Hold two convictions. God can bring possibility out of impossibility, and there is no final dead end with God.

  • Genesis 2:19-20
  • Romans 4:17

The seed principle

  • Everything has a present form and a future potential. A seed carries both identity and multiplication, and growth may pass through apparent death or surrender before it multiplies.

  • Leaders reproduce their own values, culture and character in those they develop.

  • Development is progressive. Creation moved from simpler to more complex forms; leaders build in stages and prepare the foundation for later growth.

  • Leadership is measured by what it develops — the people, systems and future leaders that emerge through your influence. Maximise what is entrusted to you.

The aim is God's glory

  • The goal is God's glory, not personal prominence.

  • The first Adam did not fully realise the mandate; Jesus, the second Adam, fulfils it. Creation waits for the manifestation of the sons of God.

  • The highest expression of leadership is to reveal Christ in everything you touch.

  • 1 Corinthians 15:45
  • Hebrews 2:6-10
  • Romans 8:19

QUESTIONS TO SIT WITH

For personal study, or to take into a group.

  1. 1

What has been entrusted to you that you have been managing rather than developing?

  2. 2

Where is your influence currently hidden or ineffective — and what would make it impossible to ignore?

  3. 3

Adam named the animals. What in your life are you refusing to call by its proper name?

  4. 4

Name the values and character you are actually reproducing in the people under your influence.

  5. 5

If leadership is measured by what it develops, what has your leadership developed in the last year?
